The author is Samuel Rutherford, who was a Scottish Covenanter in the 16th or 17th century. This little book is made up of excerpts from his letters, as well as two full letters at the end. The last excerpt says it all: 'No pen, no words, no image can express to you the loveliness of my only, only Lord Jesus.' This is, as Handley Meulle wrote, "a small casket with many jewels". In it, Rutherford encourages those to whom he writes, telling them over and over of how altogether lovely Christ is. These were times of persecution for some, and sorrow for others. Rutherford himself knew sorrow: his wife died, and he was exiled from his church and the town where he lived, and at another time was imprisoned; yet, through the whole of it, his love for Jesus shines through. I cannot reccomend this book highly enough. Though it has quite a few outdated words, there is a glossary in the back of mine which defines them, and I find it fairly easy to understand.
